Week 8: Classroom Blocked-out Environment & Camera Set-up

Introduction:

For this week’s blog post, I’ll be talking about how I went about modeling my classroom environment and setting up my cameras. Lastly, I’ll be listing down my objectives to complete by next week.

This Week’s Task:

For this week’s task, I made a start on the classroom environment. As I have a total of 5 environments to model for this one project, I thought it’ll be ideal to complete one after the other, meaning I would maintain the familiarisation with modeling environments, speeding up my workflow. I decided to use the same workflow I used for the bedroom environment, starting off with a blocked-out environment and following with the camera setup. To get an idea of what objects to include in my classroom environment, I began by browsing through Google for inspiration, looking at high school classrooms.

Exterior Design:

After browsing the internet for inspiration, my next task was to make a start on modeling the environment, beginning with the exterior design. I find that starting off with the exterior design is great, as it shows me the amount of space I can work with. Similar to my Bedroom environment, my exterior design only consisted of four walls (one wall is temporarily hidden), a floor, and a ceiling, all created using a Polygon PLane for each of them.

Interior Design:

The objects used for my interior design were imported and downloaded from the CGTrader website that I spoke about in one of my previous blog posts. I began by importing the essential objects that were needed for the classroom scenes. I re-visited my storyboard animatic to see what objects I drew within the frames. In all fairness, the only objects I needed were a group of desks and chairs as all my scenes occur in one area of the classroom.

Essential Objects: Chairs + Desks

Once I imported my essential objects into the scene and positioned them correctly, I could now include any objects that I wanted to decorate the classroom with. However, I only needed to import and position objects at the back of the classroom, as my storyboard doesn’t consist of any scenes that show the front side of the classroom. Therefore, I only imported the typical furniture you’ll find in a common classroom, which are book shelves, drawers, and a whiteboard.

Camera Setup:

As I now had the Classroom’s geometry sorted, it was time for me to set up and position the cameras so they match the scenes in the storyboard animatic. As I did in the Bedroom environment, I chose to set up a camera for each scene, lock their positions, and hide them until I’m ready to start rendering.
