Week 14: Hallway Blocked-out Environment & Camera Set-up

Introduction:

For this week’s blog post, I’ll be talking about how I went about modeling my hallway environment and setting up my cameras. Lastly, I’ll be listing down my objectives to complete by next week.

This Week’s Task:

To start this week off, I stuck with my usual workflow and began by browsing through Google for inspiration on how I should design my hallway. I wanted my hallway to look like those typical high school hallways that you see in movies; therefore the keywords for my Google search were “high school hallways”.

Hallway Inspiration:

Once I finished scrolling through Google, I got an idea of what I wanted to create and made a start on modelling the environment, beginning with the exterior design. Modelling the exterior environment took me longer than usual, compared to the other environments, as there was more space to cover. I had to insert many more edge loops and extrude more faces in order to create the doors’ outline, and the borders for the walls, windows, and doors. After modelling the exterior environment, I duplicated all geometry twice to create two additional hallways. This meant I also had to model another box, which would connect all three hallways together.

After modelling the exterior environment, I moved on to the interior environment. Even though this scene looks packed with objects, I only needed to import a school locker and a door. These were then duplicated many times, as you can see in the screenshot below. Afterward, I went back into the ceiling geometry to extrude a few faces. These faces would be where the Area Lights would be positioned once I reach that stage. Due to these changes, I deleted the two duplicates and duplicated the main hallway again, as it had all the interior objects included this time, meaning I didn’t need to re-position the school lockers or doors for the other two hallways, as well as re-extrude the ceilings’ faces to create the outline for the Area Lights.

Camera Set-up:

Once I had completed the modelling of the entire environment, I was now ready to set up the cameras. Again, to know where to position them, I re-visited my storyboard animatic to use as a reference.
