Week 11: Texturing Train Environment & Lighting Set-up

Introduction:

In this week’s blog post, I’ll be talking about how I managed to texture the train environment and set up the lighting. Lastly, I’ll be listing down my objectives to complete by next week.

This Week’s Task:

To start this week off, I continued working on my train environment, focusing on the texturing. I began by texturing the exterior environment first. As most trains consist of that greyish look mainly, with a pinch of colour, I decided to follow that approach and texture my train so that 90% of it was grey, and the remaining 10% was navy. For the glass material, I used a glass preset material as it was ideal for me. I only needed my glass to be transparent with some slight reflection.

In regards to the interior objects’ textures, I tried applying the same colour scheme to them, making sure they were grey and navy too. As you can see in the screenshot below, the side glass is slightly darker than usual. This was because of that material, I used a glass preset, consisting of 50% blend only, as these sorts of glass have a tad of colour on them in real life.

Lighting Set-up:

Once I’ve textured the entire train environment and was happy with the turnout, I moved on to the lighting setup, beginning by creating a SkyDomeLight and applying an HDRI texture onto it.

HDRI Lighting:

After setting up the HDRI light, I had a quick preview of my train environment via Arnold Render View to see how it looked. At this stage, the environment was way too dark; however, this didn’t bother me as i still had the ceiling Spot Lights to add to the scene.

Lights:

When adding in the Spot Lights, I quickly went back to modelling the ceiling, inserting edge loops and extruding faces so that I could create the outline for each ceiling light. Afterward, I positioned each Spot Light in the center of the faces and adjust their intensity, where I was experimenting to see what level gives off the best lighting.

Once I finished setting up the Spot Lights, I rendered my scene again via Arnold Render View to check the current appearance, and I was more than satisfied with how it looked, meaning I was able to progress and move on from this stage.

Objectives For Next Week:

  • Model bus environment
  • set-up cameras
