Week 5: Modelling & Texturing Kitchen & Livingroom Environments.

Introduction:

For this week’s blog, I’ll be talking you through how I went about modelling and texturing the kitchen and living room environments. Lastly, I’ll set my personal objectives to complete to by the end of the upcoming week.

This Week’s Task:

Modelling Kitchen Environment:

To start this week off, I began by modelling the Kitchen environment, beginning with the exterior design which only consisted of walls, floor, ceiling, and borders for the window and walls.

Next, I moved on to the interior environment, where I imported many objects as a common kitchen consists of many various objects. I made sure i got the essential objects, such as a fridge, oven, sink, and cupboards, as well as a rolling pin which will be used for a couple of scenes.

Once I finished importing and positioning the interior objects, I was ready to begin texturing. For a few of the materials, I increased the metalness level so that it has a bit of shine towards them. I did this for the fridge, oven, sink, and kitchen counter. However, I kept it low as I didn’t want a large render time. When I get to the rendering stage, I may adjust the metalness depending on the render time.

Once I had finished texturing the kitchen environment, a made a quick preview via Arnold Render View to check the amount of shine the metal materials emit, as well as the render time itself. I was satisfied with both the appearance and render time.

Modelling Livingroom Environment:

After modelling and texturing the kitchen environment, I was ready to move on to the living room environment. Modelling the living room’s exterior didn’t take much time for me as I only had to model the four walls, ceiling, floor, and window and wall borders, as well as deleting some geometry so that the living room connects to the downstair hallway environment.

I wasn’t required to import many objects into the living room environment as I only planned to do a couple of scenes here. Therefore, I imported the objects you would usually see in the front of a living room, such as a sofa, chair, coffee table, and TV unit.

After positioning the importing the objects into their location, I was ready to begin texturing, beginning with the exterior environment, which only took me about two minutes to complete. Whereas for the interior environment, I had to create new materials and make some slight adjustments as I wanted the coffee table and TV unit to emit some reflection. I did this by adding some spectacular and metalness to the materials.

After texturing the environment, I went into Arnold Render View to see how my scene appeared. I personally think it looks a bit dull; however, I didn’t want to spend more time on this section as I would go off my time schedule. With that said, if I have any additional time in the end before I start my renders, I may come back and include a few more objects.

Objectives For Next Week:

  • Set-up lighting for all environments.
  • Set-up Cameras.
  • Search & clean up character rigs textures.
  • Import Character Rigs.
